Domain Names for Your Non-Profit Website

Inexpensive advertising is crucial for a non profit organization, and the right domain name can help. Non profits especially may have long or specific names and in this case, abbreviating smartly can make your domain name more memorable and easy to use. Instead of using the whole name of your non profit, consider only the most relevant parts for your domain. If another non profit has a similar mission, your name may already be taken as a domain. You can still find a memorable and relevant domain name for your non profit. Ask yourself:
  • Is it too short or too long? P.A.T.H.: People Attempting to Help is a real nonprofit, but the whole name is long and unwieldy for a domain name and just plain "P.A.T.H" is too short. "PATHofYork" or even its literal mission, "YorkAssistanceShelter," may make more sense and be searched as a domain name before the whole name of the nonprofit.
  • Is it memorable? "People Attempting To Help" sounds nice but is too generic to be much help to your non profit domain name.
  • Is it easy to spell? Using an unusual acronym or spelling can make your domain name harder to remember and do your non profit a disservice.
