Domain Names for Your School Website

Is your school domain name as unique and memorable as your school? Moreover, is that school domain name still free? As many schools have similar names, mascots, and areas of focus, its important to secure your domain name sooner rather than later. Whether a private university seeking students or a small elementary school seeking community support and awareness, smart schools are scooping up memorable, easy-to-use, and relevant domain names. You can still choose a name that fulfills all of these needs. Ask yourself:
  • Is it memorable? A catchy school domain is better even if it is a little longer; people remember meaningful words, not unusual abbreviations and numbers. "Harbor View Elementary" could be shortened to "HarbViewElem" but the unusual abbreviation makes it hard to remember.
  • If you do use an acronym, make sure it's the most logical for your school's domain name: "HVElementary" is more suitable a domain name than the above.
  • Is it relevant? Is the name of your school still featured in the domain? "Harbor View Elementary" could take the domain name "Elementarybythesea" but the domain name no longer matches the school name - and may be confusing. "HarborVeiwCougars" or "HarborViewStudents" is more logical.
  • Is it easy to spell? Even though intentional domain misspellings may seem cute or memorable, they often leave someone guessing how to "properly misspell" your school name.
